SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Nov. 15, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Registered nurses at Corewell Health of Southern Michigan have voted to join the Teamsters. Wisconsin unions score major win with court ruling restoring collective bargaining rights! MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin public worker and teachers unions scored a major legal victory Monday with a ruling that restores collective bargaining rights they lost under a 2011 state law that sparked weeks of protests and made the state the center of the national battle over union rights. Republicans vowed to immediately appeal the ruling, which ultimately is likely to go before the Wisconsin Supreme Court. That only amplifies the importance of the April election that will determine whether the court remains controlled 4-3 by liberal justices.

Today, November 13th, 2024 the Board issued a decision in Amazon.com Services LLC, ruling that an employer violates the National Labor Relations Act by requiring employees under threat of discipline or discharge to attend meetings in which the employer expresses its views on unionization. Overruling Babcock & Wilcox Co., 77 NLRB 577 (1948), the Board explained that such meetings—commonly known as captive-audience meetings—violate Section 8(a)(1) of the Act because they have a reasonable tendency to interfere with and coerce employees in the exercise of their Section 7 rights. However, the Board made clear that an employer may lawfully hold meetings with workers to express its views on unionization so long as workers are provided reasonable advance notice of: the subject of any such meeting, that attendance is voluntary with no adverse consequences for failure to attend, and that no attendance records of the meeting will be kept.
Seven-Hundred and Seventy-Five Bargaining Unit Teamster Local 317 members went on strike at midnight on September 8th, 2024, after Borg Warner gave a disingenuous Last, Best, and Final Offer. The strike was 98% authorized by the Membership and swift action was taken. In full-force the pavement was hit, picketing the Company, and demanding a fair contract. A Tentative Offer was reached within days. The Offer made progress but did not meet the standards and demands of the Members, who overwhelmingly voted it down. Throughout the strike, Members were flooded with support from rallies, to donations, and being present on the picket line. Support came from the community, local businesses, multiple other Local Unions, and politicians. Teamsters Local 449, Cheektowaga, NY, Teamsters Local 118, Rochester NY, and Teamsters Local 294, Albany, NY all showed out in maximum capacity to support their Brothers and Sisters picketing the Employer. During the second week of the strike, the Committee and the Employer were able to reach another Tentative Offer which included rescinding concessions demanded by the Employer, and complementing them with multiple gains for the workforce. Bargaining Unit Members voted on Saturday, September 21st, and overwhelmingly approved and ratified the new 4-year term offer. This agreement puts the Members back on track after years of working with the Company by giving up and giving back conditions during poorer economic times and through the Pandemic. The Employer has already relocated a large amount of work from the New York facility to Mexico. This contract was a line in the sand that was drawn by the courage and conviction of the workers. Teamsters Local 317 will stop at nothing to uphold the standard of living in our represented districts and our core industries, as well as continue to combat corporate outsourcing and the relocation of good paying Union American jobs. The Membership is the backbone of our Union and our Members are never afraid to fight for the dignity and respect from their Labor and the Contracts that uphold them.

Front Page - International Brotherhood of Teamsters

The Teamsters are America’s largest, most diverse union. The Teamsters are known as the champion of freight drivers and warehouse workers, but have organized workers in virtually every occupation imaginable, both professional and non-professional, private sector and public sector. There are nearly 1,900 Teamster affiliates throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

Teamsters stand ready to organize workers who want to bargain collectively. Once a contract is negotiated and signed, the Union works to enforce it—holding management’s feet to the fire and invoking contract grievance procedures if management chooses not to. Wages and benefits under Teamster contracts are markedly better than those of non-union employees in similar jobs. Teamster contracts are the guarantors of decent wages, fair promotion, health coverage, job security, paid time-off and retirement income.

The Teamsters Union also performs vital tasks in such areas as pension management, safety & health, community outreach, governmental affairs and communications. For more than a century, the Teamsters have been a public voice for the rights and aspirations of working men and women and a key player in securing them

    NATIONAL LABOR RELATIONS BOARD

Home | National Labor Relations Board (nlrb.gov)

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is an independent federal agency created in 1935 and vested with the power to safeguard employees’ rights to organize, engage with one another to seek better working conditions, choose whether or not to have a collective bargaining representative negotiate on their behalf with their employer, or refrain from doing so. The NLRB also acts to prevent and remedy unfair labor practices committed by private sector employers and unions, as well as conducts secret-ballot elections regarding union representation. The NLRB is a bifurcated agency governed on one side by a five-person Board and on the other side by a General Counsel. Board Members and the General Counsel are appointed by the President with the consent of the Senate. The responsibilities and functions of the Agency under the 1935 National Labor Relations Act, as amended, are carried out by the National Labor Relations Board and its General Counsel, who, in addition to independent authority under the statute, exercises other authority by delegation from the Board.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person's race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy and related conditions, gender identity, and sexual orientation), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information.

Most employers with at least 15 employees are covered by EEOC laws (20 employees in age discrimination cases). Most labor unions and employment agencies are also covered.

The laws apply to all types of work situations, including hiring, firing, promotions, harassment, training, wages, and benefits.

Over the past decade, many states have made tremendous strides on moving away from arcane, draconian drug criminalization policies towards legalization for commercial and recreational cannabis. As this shift in policy has come, business empires around cannabis have grown exponentially, reaping billions of dollars in revenue in just a few short years. The Teamsters Union is building a grassroots movement of workers committed to ensuring that the people who make these companies succeed aren’t left out of the prosperity associated with this budding industry.
